Lithuania: President signs public broadcaster law

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has signed into law amendments to legislation governing the country’s public broadcaster, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), BNS reports. The changes will create a new board of directors for LRT, expand the company’s governing council, and establish fixed terms for council members and increase their powers. Also, the amendments will revise the conditions for dismissing LRT’s director general. Meanwhile, LRT’s current director general, Monika Garbaciauskaite-Budriene, noted that popular protests had managed to stop the company’s “media capture” by the ruling majority in parliament. However, writing in The Baltic Times, she said that the campaign against the proposed amendments only achieved a partial victory and that the bigger battle for LRT’s independence lies ahead. In the meantime, LRT celebrated its 100th anniversary on 12 June 2026, LRT reported.
