Lithuania: Presidential aide urges debate on Vilnius metro

Lithuania should resume discussion on the possibility of building a metro system in Vilnius, Vaidas Augustinavicius, chief economic and social policy adviser to President Gitanas Nauseda, said, BNS reports. Speaking in an interview with Ziniu Radijas, Augustinavicius argued that the project should be reassessed given the new geopolitical context. He suggested that the underground metro system could serve not just public transportation but also national security needs by providing civilian shelter and protecting communications networks. Moreover, part of the project could be financed through the EU’s new European Competitiveness Fund, he said. Supporters of building a metro in Vilnius contend that the project would attract major investment and ease traffic congestion, while critics warn that the project would not be economically viable and could damage the city’s cultural heritage.
