Lithuania: Social Democrats confirm party chairman

The party congress of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) has confirmed the election of Mindaugas Sinkevicius as the party’s chairman until 2029, LRT reports. He was the only candidate for the post, receiving 503 votes out of 535. Sinkevicius has led LSDP since August 2025 after the party’s previous chairman, MP Gintautas Paluckas, resigned amid a criminal probe into his business dealings. Sinkevicius announced that LSDP’s council would convene in May 2026 to make a final decision on whether to seek any changes to the current LSDP-led coalition government. He argued that the “drawn-out issue” was “secondary” to voters and was “wearing everyone out.” Questions about the future of the coalition arose after many MPs representing LSDP’s coalition partners voted against the establishment of a new military training area in Kapciamiestis near the border with Poland and Belarus.
