The Foreign Ministry of Georgia summoned the Estonian and Lithuanian ambassadors and the Latvian chargĂ© d’affaires to express its concern over plans to impose sanctions on senior Georgian government officials, Agenda.ge reports. The ministry said that the plans amounted to “interference in Georgia’s internal affairs.” Earlier, the Baltic foreign ministers announced sanctions against several Georgian officials deemed responsible for the violent repression of popular protests against the government’s suspension of EU membership talks. The Georgian Foreign Ministry insisted that the authorities were simply maintaining public order and security. Also, the ministry “dispelled claims” that the government had suspended the EU membership talks, insisting that the government had instead reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the process of European integration under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement of 2014.
