Baltic: Georgian officials sanctioned for human rights violations

The three Baltic States have imposed entry bans on 11 Georgian officials due to their involvement in suppressing mass protests against the Georgian government’s decision to delay the country’s EU accession talks, Civil Georgia reports. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania urged the EU to levy sanctions on Georgian officials responsible for the violent police crackdown, Devdiscourse reported. The EU’s new foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said that the repression of protests would “have direct consequences,” Euronews reported. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that the sanctioned officials were responsible for serious human rights violations. The list includes Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri, several high-ranking Interior Ministry officials, and businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Georgian Dream had been “systematically lying to Georgians for a long time.”
