The lowest level of material and social deprivation in the Baltic States was in Estonia in 2023, according to Eurostat data, LSM reports. Estonia had altogether around 31,000 people who were suffering from severe material and social deprivation in 2023, which was down from 40,000 in 2022. The number stood at 108,000 (135,000) in Latvia and at 168,000 (163,000) in Lithuania. The overall rate of severe material and social deprivation in Estonia was 2.5% (3.3%) of the population, which was the lowest rate in the entire EU. The rate stood at 6.1% (6.0%) in Lithuania and at 6.2% (7.8%) in Latvia. The average rate in the EU was 6.8% in 2023. Material and social deprivation refers to the inability to afford essential goods, services, or social activities.
