European Commission official Maive Rute has announced that she is willing to run for president of Estonia, ERR reports. Currently, Rute serves as deputy director-general of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, and Entrepreneurship (DG GROW). Her name was first mentioned as a possible presidential candidate by former president Toomas Hendrik Ilves in April 2026. Rute said that she had spoken about her possible candidacy with all major parties that have not named their own candidate yet. She described herself as a right-leaning centrist and said that she could bring together the economy, economic security, and foreign policy. Rute suggested having a public debate with the current presidential frontrunner, Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise, who has received support from the Estonian Reform Party, Estonia 200, and the Social Democratic Party.
