Estonia: Finance Minister dismisses inflation talk

Estonian Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi said that public outcry over inflation was misplaced, ERR reports. He argued that complaining about rising prices was “as stupid as cursing bad weather when you wake up in the morning.” Ligi stressed that most prices were not under government control, and that the government could thus neither cause nor contain inflation. He insisted that most price increases should not be a focal point of political or economic debate. If inflation was really making people poorer, consumption would already have decreased, pulling prices down, the minister explained. At the same time, he raised questions about the reliability of official inflation statistics, pointing to gaps in data collection. Prices in Estonia rose by 1.1% in June 2025 compared to May 2025 and by 5.2% compared to June 2024, according to Statistics Estonia’s preliminary flash estimate, ERR reported.
