Lithuania’s State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) found no tax violations at a startup company co-owned by Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, BNS reports. VMI initiated checks at battery system developer Garnis, of which Paluckas owns 49%, in June 2025, following a request from the chairman of the opposition Homeland Union, MP Laurynas Kasciunas. Earlier, the state-owned national development bank, ILTE, granted a preferential soft loan of EUR 200,000 to Garnis when Paluckas was already serving as prime minister. There was speculation that the money may have been transferred to another company co-owned by Paluckas. Lithuania’s Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT) and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) are conducting a pre-trial investigation into possible credit fraud in the case, and the Chief Official Ethics Commission (VTEK) is investigating Paluckas for possible conflict of interest.
