Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna panned comments by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel who implied that the Baltic States and Poland bore indirect responsibility for Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, ERR reported. Tsahkna said that the reason for Russia’s aggression lies in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “inability to come to terms with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the earlier willingness of Western countries to negotiate with him, and their tendency to turn a blind eye to his actions.” Policy mistakes, including by Merkel, emboldened Russia, Tsahkna stated. He contrasted Merkel’s comments with those of current German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who lamented Germany’s failure to heed Baltic warnings about Russian imperialism. Meanwhile, MP Marko Mihkelson, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, noted that Merkel was not the only German politician who still blamed the Baltic States and Poland for Russia’s aggression, ERR reported.
