Estonia: President doubles down on Russia comments

Estonian President Alar Karis gave a long interview to ERR’s Vikerraadio radio channel, in which he expanded on his earlier statements about possible dialogue with Russia, ERR reports. He lamented that many politicians in Estonia had rushed to condemn his views without actually reading them, and stressed the need to “face reality” and “allow for open discussion.” Karis reiterated his view that Europe should have “tried more” to negotiate with Russia on peace in Ukraine before the full-scale invasion in 2022. Possible negotiations will have to be assessed after the war in Ukraine comes to an end, he said. However, engaging with Russia can only begin once Russia changes, the president added, pointing out that Germany changed after World War II as well. He noted that Estonia could not choose its neighbours, and that avoiding all contact had not worked anywhere in history. Trying to isolate a country completely is not feasible, and if Estonia fails to engage, others will, Karis stated.
