The number of children aged 0-17 years in Latvia totalled 334,233 in the beginning of 2026, which was down 2.7% from 343,555 a year earlier, according to the Central Statistical Bureau’s (CSP) data, LSM reported. Children accounted for 18.1% (18.5%) of Latvia’s population. The number of boys amounted to 171,836 (176,322) and girls to 162,486 (167,233). Municipalities around the Latvian capital, Riga, had the highest and municipalities along the country’s eastern border the lowest share of children. Of Latvia’s regions, the eastern Latgale region had the lowest share of children (15.5%). Altogether 325,056 (334,167) of all children were Latvian citizens, 1,176 (1,501) non-citizen residents of Latvia, and 8,090 (7,887) foreign nationals or stateless persons. The most popular first names for boys born in 2025 were Teodors, Marks, and Olivers, while the most popular names for girls were Emilija, Sofija, and Amelija.
