Latvia: PM pans Defence Minister after drone incidents

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina sharply criticised Defence Minister Andris Spruds after drones from Russia crashed in Latvian territory, LETA reported. Silina pointed to the lack of timely warning to local residents about the incoming drones. The government’s EUR 2bn defence budget means that people will expect accountability from the minister, she stated. Silina said that she would discuss the incidents with Spruds on 11 May 2026. Meanwhile, opposition parties plan a vote of no confidence in Spruds, LSM reports.

One or two drones struck an oil storage facility in Rezekne on 7 May 2026, LSM reported. The search for another crashed drone continues, according to LSM. Kaspars Pudans, commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS), explained that technology used to detect drones had failed, LSM reported. Spruds said that the drones were likely launched from Ukraine to hit legitimate targets in Russia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Ukraine may send experts to strengthen air security in the Baltic states, ERR reports.
