Lithuania: Ruling party leader open to dialogue with Belarus

Lithuania should not rule out dialogue with neighbouring Belarus, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the ruling Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), stated, BNS reports. He suggested that contacts between deputy ministers could be possible, particularly if they take place at US invitation. Sinkevicius highlighted the release of political prisoners and the lifting of some sanctions after a visit by US special envoy John Coale to Minsk. Earlier, Coale urged Lithuania to hold talks with Belarus on fertiliser transit. Sinkevicius called on President Gitanas Nauseda and the LSDP-led government to agree on a long-term strategy towards Belarus, noting that “foreign policy was inseparable from diplomacy and dialogue.” Meanwhile, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry condemned the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ease restrictions on Belarusian athletes participating in international competitions, BNS reported.
