Latvia: Progressives calls for new government

Latvia’s social-democratic party, the Progressives, has decided to withdraw its support for the country’s current three-party coalition government, Andris Suvajevs, leader of the party’s parliamentary group, announced, LSM reports. The Progressives called on President Edgars Rinkevics to begin immediate consultations on the formation of a new government. Earlier, Prime Minister Evika Silina, leader of the ruling New Unity party, forced the resignation of Defence Minister Andris Spruds of the Progressives, citing loss of trust following recent drone incidents. Silina had urged the Progressives to continue in government, LETA reported. Suvajevs stated that the Prime Minister had “effectively brought down her own government” and that the cabinet was “essentially incapable of functioning.” However, the Progressives, which has nine MPs and two ministers, has not begun negotiations with other political parties on forming a new government, Suvajevs added.
