Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda rejected suggestions that relations with Belarus were improving, LRT reported. He said that there had been no positive changes on Belarusian balloon incursions, illegal migration, or participation in Russia’s war against Ukraine. There were thus no grounds to ease sanctions on Belarus, Nauseda stated. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said that Lithuania’s problems with Belarus were increasing rather than diminishing, pointing to renewed concerns over the safety of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelAES) in Astravyets, just across the border. Earlier, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the ruling Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), suggested that Lithuania consider reopening dialogue with Belarus if initiated by the US, citing “certain changes” in Minsk. Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene refused to comment, referring to Budrys instead.
