Latvia: Vehicle registration agency management resigns amid scandal

All members of the supervisory and management boards of Latvia’s Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) have resigned, following a massive data leak at the agency, LSM reports. Earlier, President Edgars Rinkevics stated that CSDD’s management could not continue in office due to the scandal, DELFI reported. He has asked Latvia’s Prosecution Office to assess the actions of CSDD officials, TVNET reports. Both Rinkevics and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs noted that CSDD had refused to sign a cyber security contract with Latvia’s Cyber Incident Response Institution (CERT.LV), TVNET reported.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has initiated an urgent internal investigation into the circumstances of and responsibility for the incident at CSDD. The investigation will review CSDD’s IT security contract with the state-owned telecommunications company, Tet. CSDD’s director, Aivars Aksenoks, noted that while CSDD’s own IT team had detected the suspicious activities in the agency’s system, Tet had failed to do so, LSM reported. Also, he asserted that CERT.LV had failed to contact CSDD through proper channels about a contract to deploy CERT.LV’s monitoring sensors, LETA reported.
