Lithuania: Proposal to limit Kaliningrad transit

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda’s national security adviser, Marius Cesnulevicius, supported a proposal to tighten controls on Russian transit through Lithuanian territory to and from the Kaliningrad region, BNS reports. Earlier, MP Arvydas Anusauskas of the conservative opposition Homeland Union proposed amendments that would cut the transit time from the current 24 hours to 6 hours, ELTA reported. He urged the government to open discussions in the EU on reviewing the Kaliningrad transit regime. Speaking in an interview with Ziniu Radijas, Cesnulevicius said that stricter rules were warranted amid a sharp rise in violations and the changed security environment. According to data from the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), nearly 13,000 Russian-registered passenger vehicles transited Lithuania in 2025.
