Lithuania: Government approval fell further in May 2026

The Lithuanian government’s job approval continued to decline in May 2026, according to a new Spinter Tyrimai poll for DELFI, BNS reports. The survey showed that just 16.7% of respondents approved of the government’s performance, which was down from 17.5% in April 2026. Only 2.1% (1.5%) had a fully positive and 14.6% (16%) had a somewhat positive view of the government, ELTA reported. Meanwhile, 71.5% of respondents disapproved of the government’s performance, which was down from 74.2%. However, 39.6% viewed the government’s performance fully negatively, which was up from 33.5% a month earlier. Another 34.6% regarded the government’s performance as somewhat negative, which was down from 40.7%. Meanwhile, 9.1% (8.3%) were undecided or did not answer.

Lithuania’s former prime minister, MP Ingrida Simonyte of the opposition conservative Homeland Union (TS-LKD), was the most popular choice for prime minister with 15.1% support among survey respondents in May 2026, which was down from 16.8% in April 2026. The opposition Lithuanian Liberal Movement’s (LLS) leader, MP Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen, came in second with 6.4% (5.7%) support, followed by MP Remigijus Zemaitaitis, leader of the far-right populist party, Dawn of Nemunas (PPNA), with 5.3% (5.5%), TS-LKD leader, MP Laurynas Kasciunas, with 4.1% (2.4%), Lithuanian Union of Farmers and Greens (LVZS) leader, MEP Aurelijus Veryga, with 3.9% (3.5%), and incumbent Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) with 3.7% (3.5%).
