Lithuania’s parliamentary committee on culture has approved amendments to the controversial draft law governing the country’s public broadcaster, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), LRT reported. The committee approved a new management board, an expanded governing council, shorter four-year council terms, and tighter eligibility requirements for council member candidates. The committee dropped proposals to let the council approve editorial guidelines, to restrict other media organisations from participating in producing content, and to link budget funding to government contracts. However, the committee did not reduce the number of politically appointed council members and decided that the changes would come into force immediately. The draft amendments will now go back to the full parliament, the Seimas, for further consideration.
