The Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, has approved the appointment of Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), as the country’s new prime minister, BNS reports. Altogether 80 MPs voted for and only 2 MPs against Sinkevicius’s nomination, while 28 MPs abstained. He now has 15 days to present his cabinet of ministers and a government programme to the parliament. Sinkevicius has said that he would appoint up to seven new ministers. Earlier, President Gitanas Nauseda revealed that he had urged Sinkevicius to take over as prime minister in 2025 after the resignation of the previous LSDP leader, Gintautas Paluckas, LRT reported. Nauseda expects the new coalition government to last through the remainder of the current parliamentary term.
