Lithuania: Russian assassination plot foiled

Officials in Lithuania have arrested nine individuals accused of plotting murders and sabotage across Europe for Russia’s military intelligence service, GRU, The New York Times reports. Authorities said that the GRU-affiliated network had targeted several people who had supported Ukraine or worked against Russia. The network included citizens of Georgia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine. One of those arrested was a dual Russian and Greek citizen who apparently planned to assassinate Ruslan Gabbasov, an exiled activist campaigning for the independence of the Republic of Bashkortostan in central Russia. The purported assassin was caught carrying a pistol and waiting outside Gabbasov’s home in Lithuania. Earlier, he found an Apple AirTag tracking device in his car. Despite the fact that Russia accuses Gabbasov of terrorism, he has refused to go into witness protection.
