The Baltic States and Poland are preparing for possible Russian false-flag attacks against critical infrastructure, Reuters reports. Authorities have increased security measures at power and energy infrastructure facilities. A Baltic intelligence official expressed worry that a Russian attack could trigger “political chaos” at NATO headquarters and in allied capitals on how to respond. Latvia’s Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB) said that Russia’s aim would be to increase psychological pressure on NATO countries, LETA reported. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs warned that a “potential hybrid threat” was more likely than it was before. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said that Lithuania was cooperating with Ukraine and NATO allies to gather more intelligence, LRT reported.
Meanwhile, German investigators have found a possible link between a recent drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport and incendiary parcels sent from Lithuania in 2024, BNS reported. According to German newspaper Bild, a DNA trace found during the investigation into the drone incident matched evidence collected at a DHL logistics centre in Leipzig in July 2024. The drone incident occurred one day after testimony given by Philippe Bauer, DHL’s European security director, at a Lithuanian court in connection with the parcel case. Germany has invited the Baltic States, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway to security talks following the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, BNS reported. US intelligence suggested that Russia was behind the incident, The Wall Street Journal reported.
