Latvia: Coalition postpones decision on airBaltic management

Parties in Latvia’s coalition government have postponed decisions on possible changes to the management of the country’s national air carrier, airBaltic, LSM reports. Prime Minister Evika Silina said that the government would wait for decisions of airBaltic’s shareholders. She noted that airBaltic was partly privately-owned, and that the government did not manage the company directly. Transport Minister Kaspars Briskens stressed the importance of adhering to principles of good governance. Both Silina and Briskens criticised airBaltic for its “failed communication” on mass cancellations of flights in summer 2025, LETA reported. Meanwhile, Economy Minister Viktors Valainis still insisted that airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss be fired. He tied the issue to the question of possible state support for airBaltic. However, Silina reminded that EU rules precluded direct state support for airlines.
