Latvia: Government to decide on airBaltic’s future: PM

The Latvian government needs to make a decision on the future of the country’s national airline, airBaltic, in summer 2026, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated, LETA reports. Speaking in an interview with TV3, Kulbergs said that airBaltic remained a strategic state asset, but stressed that taxpayer money could no longer be the sole support for the ailing airline. Any long-term solution for the company would require private capital, he said. Earlier, airBaltic suspended its planned IPO amid heavy losses and current market conditions. Meanwhile, the company has repaid the first instalment of its EUR 30mn emergency state loan, LETA reported. The company’s supervisory board is currently reviewing a new business plan for the airline, LETA reports. The carrier is assessing route profitability and optimising capacity. The company employs around 3,000 people directly and supports thousands more jobs in related industries.
