Latvia: Three parties agree on coalition talks

Latvia’s opposition National Alliance and United List have reached a preliminary agreement with the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) to cooperate in forming a new government, LSM reports. However, the three groups only have 41 seats in the Latvian parliament, the Saeima, which is 10 short of a majority. Forming a new government without outgoing Prime Minister Evika Silina’s party, New Unity, which has 25 MPs, thus seems difficult. Edmunds Jurevics, leader of New Unity’s parliamentary group, said that the party would not form a government with pro-Russian and populist parties, referring to For Stability and Latvia First (LPV). Also, Edgars Tavars, co-chairman of United List, said that the party alliance’s red lines were “Moscow and corruption,” LSM reported. Following the collapse of Silina’s coalition government, President Edgars Rinkevics will hold talks with parliamentary groups on 15 May 2026.
