Lithuania: Social Democratic leader may replace PM

Reports in Lithuania suggest that Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), may replace Inga Rugininene as the country’s prime minister, ELTA reports. LSDP is currently negotiating with the opposition Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL) on forming a new coalition government together with the joint parliamentary group of the Lithuanian Union of Farmers and Greens and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania. Sinkevicius, who is now serving as mayor of Jonava, refused to confirm the reports about him becoming prime minister, saying that only one or two ministers could be replaced. He suggested that DSVL leader, MEP Virginijus Sinkevicius, could become foreign minister, ELTA reported. The new coalition would have 75 MPs in Lithuania’s 141-seat parliament, the Seimas, LRT reported. Earlier, LSDP decided to end its coalition agreement with the far-right populist party, Dawn of Nemunas, due to various disagreements and controversies.
