The US Department of State has sent a letter to Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine, asking them to lift sanctions on Belarusian potash and allow transit shipments through their territories, RFE/RL reports. The letter stated that US companies were interested in buying Belarusian potash shipped via Baltic or Ukrainian ports so as to avoid Russian ports. The letter further proposed that transit income be used to finance Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s invasion. Earlier, the US lifted sanctions on the Belarusian state-owned fertiliser producer, Belaruskali, which used to ship most of its exports through Lithuania’s Klaipeda State Seaport before the EU imposed sanctions on the industry. Belarusian exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya insisted that now was not the time to ease sanctions against the Belarusian regime.
