Latvia: Estonia rejects offer to buy into airBaltic

The Estonian government has rejected an offer to buy shares in Latvia’s national air carrier, airBaltic, LSM reports. Estonia’s Infrastructure Minister, Kuldar Leis, explained that the decision was due to the fact that airBaltic’s change of management had not been completed and its financial situation remained problematic. He said that Estonia would not raise airport fees over the next three years, ERR reported. Earlier, Latvia’s Transport Ministry proposed that Estonia, Lithuania, and German airline Lufthansa buy up to 10% of airBaltic’s shares for EUR 14mn each. Lufthansa has accepted the offer, whereas the Lithuanian government is yet to decide. Lithuanian officials previously stated that any deal would necessitate an agreement with airBaltic on either a base at Vilnius International Airport or flight operations, ERR reported.
